I didn’t know that until recently, when I attended a walking tour at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and was identified by the museum’s volunteer. She told me that I was the only one who didn’t have the standard redhead highlights in the early fall. In the past, I would have thought she was mistaken. The Redheaded Stepchild. Or was I not redheaded? My mother always called me redheaded. What about the Irish? I don’t have the classic Irish red hair. The color is a bit more than medium to dark auburn, which sounds good enough to me. The photo below looks more like orange than red. But my red hair color was decided about a month before birth. Most people have a difficult time telling me apart from other redheads, which makes the lack of recognition unusual. When I was born in Portland, Oregon, in the summer of 1974, my mother had just moved there from her native Boston. She decided to start anew in the rainy Pacific Northwest, buying her first house in a newly built development near a university. The complex in the small city of Wilsonville was already more than half-built when she bought it. But it had a pool and a huge playground for the kids in the neighborhood. It was a great place to grow up, in a neighborhood where kids could walk around the neighborhood without worrying about getting mugged or abducted. It took me months to learn to play in the pool. I was too big, and I’m not sure what the spinner was. I just kept swimming over the sides. I would jump in and play in the water at other playgrounds. But not in the pool. I was the only redhead in the neighborhood who didn’t jump in. I would take a shallow dive out of the inflatable castle when I was about three years old.
